The term Local is becoming more and more popular
for the food we eat and the products / shops we support. I like this movement for many reasons
but I also have begun to ponder how it might be detrimental.
How can this limit us when it comes to art the art
I recently returned from the New England Products Trade show
in Portland Maine. The vast array of wonderful products boosted a very creative New England marketplace. BUt I was struck by the
cliques and niches which I encountered. New Hampshire buyers were looking for New Hampshire Products, Vermont shops for their own locality and so forth. A line in the sand prevented a sales. Ironically I am technically a British Artist residing in Maine creating universal images, so my art is not "Maine" themed but I am by nature of my locality considered a Main artist and thus overlooked.
